The effect of brood incubation temperature on the reproductive value bee (Apis mellifera) drones

AbstractThe effect of capped brood incubation temperature on the reproductive value of honey bee (Apis mellifera) drones was examined. Drones incubated at 32°C had larger reproductive organs and a higher percentage of live spermatozoa. On the other hand drones incubated at 35°C were more likely to have everted copulatory apparatus and they ejaculated a larger volume of semen. To collect a semen dose of 8 μl, on average 16.2 drones incubated at lower temperature were required, but 10.9 drones incubated at higher temperature produced the same amount.
