Changes of soil reaction and consumption of lime fertilizers in Poland

Abstract

The problem of soil acidification in Poland is most serious and aggravating constantly. In this respect Poland stands out negatively from the other European countries as about 50% of all soils are characterized by pH from slightly acidto acid, whereas in the other countries the proportion is between 20 and 30%. From the agricultural point of view the outcomes of soil acidification are crucially important because the proper utilization of nutrients mineral fertilizers by plants is possible only at the proper soil reaction and adequate content of organic matter. Also environmental functions of maintaining proper soil pH seem no lessimportant, which to a considerable degree affects limited uptake of toxic substances by plants, including heavy metals. The paper presents the state of soil acidification and lime fertilizers consumption in Poland over the last years.
