Klatki porodowe - dobrostan prosiąt czy zniewolenie loch?
AbstractMaternal responsiveness of sows affects the survival of piglets by determining the economic performance of pig production. The aim of this paper was to present the interaction between the housing system for sows in the periparturient period and lactation (farrowing crates vs farrowing pens), as well as the hormonal changes occurring in sows at the time. Their combined impact on the behaviour of sows and the level of their well-being which in turn shape the production results was also demonstrated. The following factors determining the level of welfare of sows in the perinatal period were taken into account: the type of the farrowing accommodation, the surface of the pen, including the impact of systems preventing freedom of movement as well as open, alternative systems. The signifivance of the construction of the nest for the further course of rearing piglets and the welfare of sows was discussed, as well.
