Przydatność badań histologicznych w ocenie jakości surowca futrzarskiego

AbstractHistology is the science of microscopic structure of living bodies, the development and function of their tissues. As a field of knowledge, histology changed from a purely descriptive science into a science that examines not only cell and tissue forms and structures, but also their function. Its development is strictly related to the invention of microscope, which made it possible to study small objects invisible to the naked eye. The basic method of histological analysis is microscopic observation of prepared and stained tissues. Appearance of the fur reflects the animal body’s health, and every observed change signals some abnormalities in the organism. Histological examination is useful in that it allows identifying the normal structure of cells, tissues and organs in different physiological states or developmental stages, and is essential for understanding changes that occur in different disease conditions and for detecting structural abnormalities of dermal tissue and hair structure. In addition, histological analysis enables accurately determining hair coat density, which makes it useful for determining the hair-forming potential of skin. The histological study of skins from fur-bearing carnivores, conducted at the National Research Institute of Animal Production in collaboration with the University of Agriculture in Kraków revealed considerable differences in the thickness of different skin layers. The analysed population of long-haired fur animals was characterized by medium thick hair coat and overly soft and fragile guard hair in common foxes and raccoon dogs. Such delicacy of hair coat becomes a defect because it is conducive to hair becoming felted and matted. Fox skins had the advantage of being thin and light.
