AbstractA relationship between variety - specific potato tuber features and permanence of surface soiling with dirt was assumed. In particular, it wee assumed that an increased external coefficient of tuber friction against the underlayment correlates positively with an increased level of surface soiling, unfavorably affecting crop separation conditions and separator efficiency. Thirteen varieties of potatoes grown in medium compact soil were Studied. The level of surface soiling of potato tubers hand picked from ridge and the level of surface soil freeing from crop after harvesting with type Z 644 and E 667/4 potato harvesters was determined. The susceptibility of potato varieties to surface sailing was evaluated by laboratory methods by treating tuber periderm with dry soil powder. Coefficients of external static and kinetic friction of tubers against an underlayment of fabric reinforced rubber and a steel grade were determined. Trajectory and motion time were determined for Nis and Packman type separators using film methods. Based on the results of fiVe years' research it was established that tuber susceptibility to soiling is a variety specific feature, clearly dependent on environmental changes, and that soil permanently adhering to periderm negatively affects the performance of separator assemblies of potato harvesters. The varieties of potatoes more sus¬ceptible to soil powder adherence to tuber periderm under laboratory conditions had more surface soiling with dirt. This relationship allows the establishment, by a simple method, the susceptibility of potato varieties to permanent soiling. Variety specific features of potato tubers, such as periderm roughness and elongation factor, which are related, as determined, to surface soiling, may be beneficially used in selecting potato varieties for growing in heavier soils. The method of measuring the coefficient of external kinetic friction of tubers against grade employed in the research, reflecting to a large extent the actual motion of tubers on separator conveyors and conveyor belts, was positively verified. This creates the possibility of determining a quantity useful in designing and developing new potato harves¬ting end post harvest-processing machines and assemblies.
