Przekształcanie górskich gleb porolnych przez olszę szarą (Alnus incana (L.) Moench)
AbstractSome area in the south—east corner of Poland had been cultivated since century till early fifties. Due to the depopulation after the World War II, arable la left without cultivation were the subject to mass but natural grey alder success The alder forest covers about 33 000 ha and it is about 40 years old now. The effect of alders on soils was the subject to numerous studies. This resew was directed on soil transformation in the process of forest ecosystem restore during the last 40 years. Also environmental consequences of mass nitrogentlx species succession were studied. The range of soil transformation from arable into a forest one caused by a forest was measured by: soil morphology changes, organic matter and nitre enrichment, organic matter decomposition rate decrease, acidification, soil cat mobility enhancement, porosity and water capacity increment. Soil morphological changes were seen in vanishing of a ploughing horizon a tillage pan but also in an initial typical forest humus horizon creation. Orga matter enrichment from 3.27% to 7.89% was seen in humus horizons only, but .Decomposition rate was slower. The total nitrogen content increased from 0. io 0.71% and it was about 41 kg/ha/year. Nitrogen enrichment caused a st nitrification. hence acidification. The soil acidity decreased an average from 1 to 32.8 mmoles of H+ per 100 g of soil. This in turn caused soil cation mobiliz in soil profiles, losses for plants, but streamwater eutrophication. Also contami Lion by nitrates of local streamwater as a result of intensive soil nitrification 'Al observed. All those changes help the soils to reconstruct their biological activity ft typical arable into a forest one. It is a returning forest succession after al) 3 centuries of anthropogenic interruption in a natural biogeochemical cycle, m ning deforestation and cultivation.
