Abstract

The aim of this study was to estimate various feeding regimes of broiler breeder pullets, to determine how the age of sexual maturity is correlated with body weight of birds and to trace the effect of restricted feeding on weight and morphology of the ovary and oviduct. The study was conducted on broiler breeders As B. It included three 56-week experiments. In the rearing period various feeding systems were used. Control birds were food restricted according to the primary breeders recommendation MEM Poznan). in two experimental groups the food restriction was more severe and in one less severe than the control, one group being fed ad libitum. The following para¬meters were determined feed intake, body weight up to 40 weeks of age, age and body weight at first egg, ovary and oviduct weights at 8, 19 and 21-25 weeks of age. At first egg and at 20 weeks of production in addition to the weight of reproductive organs, the number of ovarian follicles above 3rilm diameter was also recorded. Egg number up to 40 weeks of age and at 20 and 30 weeks of production were estimated. The age of ad libitum fed hens at first egg was 157 days and body weight 4059 g. Restricted birds reached sexual maturity 4-6 weeks later with a body weight of 60-70% of ad libitum fed group. The age at first egg in the restricted Foul) was correlated with body weight which was not stated In the ad libitum birds. It was found, that a delay in reaching sexual maturity in restricted birds results among others from an adverse effects of feed restriction on the weight of the ovary and the growth of follicles. Restricted feeding during rearing reduced the number of follicles above 8 mm in diame¬ter in the hen's ovary at first egg, leading to control of multiple ovulation and increased number of hatching eggs. An analysis of various feeding regimes has shown, that under battery system of keeping broiler breeder hens Astra B it is recommended to introduce in the rearing period some changes in the primary breeders feeding program namely: to re¬duce an ad libitum feeding period tr-; to three weeks of age, at four weeks to feed a diet containing 15% of crude pro¬tein and 2700 kcal ME/kg and to reduce daily feed intake by about 10%.
