Długowełnista owca polska i kierunki jej doskonalenia w zasięgu działania okręgowych stacji hodowli zwierząt w Kielcach, Krakowie i Rzeszowie

Tadeusz Piestrak

Studies on sheep raising in the former provinces of Kielce, Krak6w and Rzeszów revealed great possibilities for sheep population increase. it is particularly valid in the area of the actual provinces of Krosno, Przemyśl, Nowy Sqcz and others. There is a disbalance between the breeding and productive values in the studied sheep population in which both wool and meat performance could be considerably improved if better environmental conditions and more efficient breeding pactices were provided. Sheep improvement in the studied area should tend to give better wool and meat yields and in the Krosno and Nowy Selcz provinces, better wool and milk yields. A part of livestock could be used to produce lambs for fattening. 1t is recommended to establish a breeding center in the area supervised by the regional Animal Breeding Station at Kielce, in particular for the Opoczyńska sheep, and another one in Krak6w region for the Olkuska type. The existence of such centers seems fully justified since both types of sheep rank very hihg. They could be based on the already existing aheeppens as well as on the collective and specialized farms provided improvement of environmental conditions for the animals and appropriate breeding methods. In the Rzeszów district there are favorable conditions to estabiah following centers: a wool-and-meat center for the lowland sheep and, with an incease in sheep population and animal improvement, a wool-and-reproduction center as well as respective centers for Polish long-wool sheep and sheep of submontane regions. In the future, 17 centers for submontane sheep could be also established in the Nowy Sqcz province. In case of a failure in organising the mentioned centers attached to the Regional Animal Breeding Stations at Kielce and Krak6w, replacement of rams for reproduction could be made according to the traditional practice, based on their own pedigree or rams could be taken from 2ozna6 and Olsztyn regions for mating with long-wool and lowland sheep while from Bydgoszcz and Poznal districts for Merino-sheep. Primitive breeds and Polish mountain sheep ocurring in the Krosno and Przemyśl provinces can used for producing lamb-crosses devised for fattening. Bearing in mind a steadily growing interest of dairy industry in sheep milk it seems imperative, particularly in the Krosno and Przemyśl provinces, to develop sheep inprovement programme toward wool-and-milk performance. A condition of increasing sheep productivity is the inprovement of the still unsatisfactory situation in breeding, care and feeding animals. Thus, special, consideration should be given to the problems connected with fedder production and zoohygienic conditions in sheep-pens and their upkeep. Mention should be made also of proper wool storage after shearing.
