Poznawcze i praktyczne znaczenie autokorelacji miąższości drzew na kontrolnych powierzchniach próbnych

Abstract

This paper contains the theoretical basis for the study of forest development dynamics as a stochastic process of the change in forest resources. The phenomenon described in detail is autocorelation as a proof of the continuity of forest progress, and a theoretical justification for forecasting its future progress. The study of autocorelation has been conducted on 959 control sample plots, belonging to a statistical-mathematical system of forest control and inventory in the mountain forestt of Krynica Research Facility. In order to study autocorelation, five research objects with the combined area of 1078 ha have been chosen. Measurements conducted on those 959 permanent control plots were repeated several times during the period 1971 - 1991. The time intervals of 2 to 20 years between the repetitions are referred to as control intervals. For those control intervals, so varied in duration, 329 autocorelation coefficients have been calculated. Those coefficients characterize the dependence of the total volume of trees on control plots belonging to separate calculation units at the end of a control interval on the respective value of this volume at the beginning of this control interval. The calculations concern B5 primary and 11 combined calculation units. It has been established that all coefficients of autocorelation in the research objects are positive, and their range is very wide (from + 0.115 to + 0.997). The value of coefficient of autocorelation depends on: - the duration of control interval, the coefficient decreases with its increase; - the intensity of forest progress, i.e. the relations between periodic ingrowth, loss and volume increment. A harmonious, natural forest development is characterized by high values of autocorelation coefficient. On the contrary, violent changes in forest resources caused by cutting or by natural calamities always lower the value of the coefficient. Consequently, it can be assumed that the coefficient of autocorelation can be used as an index of the stability of forest creatic n process. The results of those calculations have been used to create an index for the evaluation of forest development and models of management for mountain forest of complex structure in accordance with the natural direction of forest cultivation. The results were also used for forecasting the changes in forest resources.
