Abstract

The study consisted of three series of experiments. The purpose of the first series was to examine sprouting resistance variability and to evaluate the postharvest dormancy in domestic cultivars and strains of triticale. The following cultivars and strains were examined: Bolero, Dagro, Largo, Lasko, Malno, Presto, Ugo, LAD-285, MAH-183, IVIAH-384, MAH-785, MAH-885 and compared with the Emika wheat and Daiikowskie Zlote rye. The study revealed significant differences between cultivars in respect to sprouting resistance evaluated by means of direct Schleip's and indirect Hagberg-Parten's methods. The sprouting resistance level in Malno, Presto and MAI-i-384 was higher than that in the Daiikowskie Zlote rye, whereas Dagro, Salvo, Ugo and LAD-285 showed lower sprouting indexes. The other cultivars and strains achieved values of sprouting resistance similar to rye. The average germination speed of triticale grains from milk maturity to full maturity determined by Pieper's index showed shallow dormancy similar to the Datikowskie Zlote rye, however the depth of dormancy was significantly different in individual cultivars. The second series of the study concentrated on cultivar, genotypical and topographical variability of sprouting. The existing variability shows that genotypes resistant to sprouting can be selected. The variability of sprouting indexes between cultivars Almo, Grade and LAD-285 evaluated on the basis of variance components reached 72.3%, whereas variability within cultivars was higher for most indexes and reached the value of 85.6% of total variability, which indicates that cultivars constitute populations and that genotypes resistant to sprouting can be selected. The topographical variability of sprouting resistance in ears was not significant as well as correlation between the ear compactness and sprouting determined by means of Schleip's method. The results of this study indicate that there is no direct relation between the ear structure and sprouting. The last series of experiments concentrated on alpha amylase heritability for genotypes derived from crossing the Grado cultivar with 4 strains resistant to sprouting. Heritability coefficients ranged from 0.34 to 0.89. High value of heritability coefficients (0.72-0,89) observed for 55% of cross combinations indicate that genotypes with low alpha amylase activity can he achieved.
