Dynamika wzrostu drzewostanów sosnowych w wybranych regionach przemysłowych Polski południowej
AbstractThe purpose of this .study was to evaluate dendrometrically the degree of degradation of pine stands growing within the range of industrial pollution caused by the Tarnobrzeg Sulphur Plant, Legnica-Glogeow Copper District and zinc and lead foundry in Miasteczko The method of periodic measurements was utilized to realize this aim. The measurements were carried out on permanent study plots established in stands growing within the reach of industrial emissions produced by plants mentioned above, as well as in areas free of a direct effect of the emissions. Establishment of so called sets of study plots was assumed to be a rule. Each set (with an exception of two) was composed of three plots selected in pure pine stands, located within a direct neighbourhood, and growing under the site conditions of fresh coniferous forest or fresh mixed coniferous forest, but differing in age; representing age class II, HI and IVIV'. In total 55 plots (19 sets) were established, out of which 44 plots in the autumn of 1976 in the region of Legnica-G-1°05w Copper District (12), Miasteczko 814skie foundry" (11), and Tarnobrzeg Sulphur Plant (21), while 11 plots were established in Staszdw forests in 1983 (8) and 1987 (3). The measurements were carried out after termination of growing season in 1976, 1980 (in the region of Legnica-GlogOw Copper District and Miasteczko SIgskie in 1979), 1984, 1988 and 1992. Their results were utilized to evaluate the taxation characters of stands, and to determinate their growth dynamics. The method of indices was utilized in this respect. The mortality dynamics index, in a numerical aspect (WN) as well as in a volume aspect (We), the . d.b.h. basal area growth dynamics index (WG), and the growing stock growth dynamics index (Wv) were determined. The height growth dynamics was determined on the basis of changes taking place during the assumed periods of measurements of top stand height defined for the age of 100 years. The basic dendrornetric parameters of dead trees (d, h, v) were analyzed in detail. Assuming the growing stock index, determined for the control stands as a model for individual age categories, the potential losses in stands being within a reach of industrial emissions were calculated. Within the total losses (Sv), the apparent losses (Su) due to an increased mortality, and the losses resulting from increment decrease (Sze,). It was concluded that growth dynamics of dendrumetric characters of stands investigated and magnitude of definite production losses depend on stand location (region and zone of industrial damages) and age, as well as on measuring period. The stands of age class III and older showed distinct inhibition of height growth already in zone of smallest industrial damages. In these stands the tree mortality process was on the average, depending on industrial region, from 1.23 to 4.83 times more dynamic than in the control stands, and the dying trees were characterized by significantly greater relative d.b.h., height and volume. The definite total magnitude of production losses depended strictly on the age category of a stand. In the region of Legnica-Glogow Copper District and Tarnobrzeg Sulphur Plant the highest losses, amounting on the average to 5.37 m6/1 ha/1 year and 3.48 m3/I hail year respectively, were recorded in stands of middle age classes, while the smallest, 3.26 m3/1 hail year and 0.86 in3/1 hall year respectively, occurred in stands of age class II. In vicinity of Miasteczko Alqskie foundry the losses were recorded only in old stands, while in the remaining two age categories the actual growth in stand volume was considerably higher than expected, especially in age class II. In old stands and in stands of middle age classes in the Buda Stalowska management unit the losses due to increased mortality made on the average 69.0% to 88.4% of the total losses. In the region of Legnica-GlogOw Copper District in stands of youngest and middle age category the losses were mainly caused by increment inhibition. The results of this study, carried out over a large area and during a long period of time are of a unique value for the knowledge. They may be helpful in determining the danger zones, and they may provide the forest administration with the basis for evaluating the magnitude of losses due to a neighbourhood of industrial establishments. The size of the losses determined indicates the necessity for taking this fact into consideration when the management method is chosen for the forests in industrial regions.
